Anything can be art, depending on who is looking at it. There are so many different definitions and types of artwork. There are paintings, sketchings, pottery, poetry, literature, music, movies, and collections; just to name a few. Some pieces of art are seen as more exquisite and picturesque than others. These masterpieces are at the stop of the hierarchal â€Å"art world.† Some examples may include music by Mozart or paintings by Von Gogh. To be among the top of the hierarchy demonstrates much prestige. Although my art teacher’s stained glass paintings are absolutely beautiful, they may only rank in the middle of the hierarchy. Collections bring delight to not only the collectors themselves, but also to those who get to see them. However, not all collectors show their collections. This may be because they think that showing others would diminish their passion or fascination with what they collect. This could happen if the collectors receive negative feedback about their collection. If spectators were to think of the collection as stupid or useless, then the collector may feel discouraged and collecting may lose its appeal. The somewhat different, but similar problems they encounter in their real middle class suburban lives. From work, school, doing homework, cooking (thank the gods for the microwave oven) and to the after work and school activities. Trying to fit a 48-hour day into 24 hours. The hustle and bustle of real life is a more accurate portrayal of your typical family then what the media displays in the Simpsons or any other type of sit-com family. What's the Difference Subsidized vs Unsubsidized Loans SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If there's a gap between what you actuallyhave to pay for college and your school's price tag, you might be considering taking out student loans. What you might not know is that there are different types of student loans, with different terms and restrictions. First, we'll cover the basics of what it means to take on student debt. Then, we'll walk you through the differences between two major federal loan types: Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized. If you want a quick overview, just jump to the end of the article for a side-by-side comparison! First of All, What Does It Mean to Take Out a Loan? It's not uncommon for there to be a gap between what students can afford, and what college actually costs. This is where student loans come in: you can borrow money to pay for school, with the understanding that you'll pay it back (in addition to a bit extra) after you graduate. The amount of money that you actually borrow is called the principal, whereas the "extra" amount is called interest. A Little More About Interest Interest rates are always set as a percentage, so when you pay back your loan (principal + interest), you're paying back what you borrowed plus a percentage of what you borrowed. Lower interest rates = better loans, because the percentage of "extra" money you have to pay back is smaller. Here's a very simple example to demonstrate what I mean: If I borrow $100 with an annual interest rate of 10%, and I want to pay off the principal + interest in full one year later, I would owe $110 ($100 principal + 10% of $100 = $110). If I had an interest rate of 1%, though, I would only owe $101. Student loans work in the same way, although students usually borrow a bit more than $100. The amount of money you actually end up paying back depends of course on your loan principal and interest rate, but also on how often your interest capitalizes. Capitalization is when accrued (accumulated) interest is added to your principal, so you would pay interest on your original principal + capitalized interest. Bigger principal = more interest, so the less often your interest capitalizes, the better. The amount of money you end up paying back in interest also depends on how long it takes you to pay off your loan. You usually don't pay off your loan at once; you make monthly payments on interest + part of your principle. Many student loans set monthly payments that assume you will pay off your loan in 120 months, but you are free to make more than the minimum payments.The longer it takes you to pay your loan, the more interest accrues. All loans charge interest, but some lenders offer better interest rates than others. The federal government tends to offer comparatively low interest rates to student borrowers; in the rest of this post, I'll be discussing the two major types of federal student loans. The lower your interest rates, the less you'll owe in the long run. Direct Subsidized Loans Direct Subsidized loans are meant to help eligible students pay for the cost of highereducation. The thing that's most unique about Direct Subsidized loans is that the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on your student loans during certain periods. When your interest is being paid, it can't accrue or capitalize, so your principal doesn't grow (this is a good thing)! If you have a Direct Subsidized loan, you won't accrue any interest during the following periods: when you're in school at least half-time for the first 6 months after you leave school (this is called agrace period) during a period of deferment (a postponing of loan payments) You can apply for a Direct Unsubsidized loan by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Eligibility Limits First, because Direct Unsubsidized loans are forms of federal student aid, you must meet all federal student aid requirements to be considered eligible. You can get more information about these requirements here. Direct Subsidized loans are only available to undergraduate students with financial need. Your school ultimately decides how much you can borrow; the amount cannot exceed what they determine to be your financial need. There is a maximum eligibility window for you to receive Direct Subsidized loans, equivalent to 150% of your program length. For example, if you're enrolled in a 4-year college, you can only receive subsidized loans for 4*150% = 6 years. If you're enrolled in a 2-year college, your limit would be 2*150% = 3 years. Finally, there's a limit to how much you can borrow in Direct Subsidized loans - this amount depends on your year in school. The following chart outlines the annual limits and the lifetime max for Direct Subsidized loans. You can apply for a Direct Unsubsidized loan by submitting a FAFSA. Eligibility Limits Direct Unsubsidized loans are a bit more flexible than Direct Subsidized loans. You still must meet all federal student aid requirements to be eligible, but these loans are available to both undergraduates and graduates. Additionally, you're not required to demonstrate financial need in order to get an unsubsidized loan. Ultimately, your school will determine how much you can borrow depending on your cost of attendance and the rest of your financial aid package. For example, if your cost of attendance is covered by grants, scholarships, and Direct Subsidized loans, you may not be able to take out a Direct Unsubsidized loan. Unlike Direct Subsidized loans, there is no maximum eligibility window or period. There is a maximum borrowing amount, which depends on your year in school. When you take out loans from a private lender (from a bank, from example), interest rates may vary based on credit history. Federal student loan rates for Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans are standardized, and are typically pretty low; this means that interest rates are the same for all students, regardless of personal or parental credit history. This chart shows interest rates based on loan type and borrower type for loans disbursed (paid out) before 7/1/2016: Loan Type Borrower Type Interest Rate Direct Subsidized Undergraduate 4.29% Direct Unsubsidized Undergraduate 4.29% Direct Unsubsidized Graduate/Professional 5.84% We've already talked a bit about how interest is sort of like a charge that you pay in return for being able to borrow a principle. Unfortunately, there's another fee that you're charged when you take out a subsudized or unsubsidized loan. This fee isn't interest, so it doesn't accumulate; instead, a percentage is deducted from the amount you borrowed automatically when the loan is disbursed. You're responsible for paying back the entire amount that you borrowed, and not just the amount you received after the fee is deducted. I've come up with an example based on typical student debt amounts so that you can see different financial outcomes based on subsidized vs. unsubsidized loans. The average student has about $26,000-$29,000 in federal student debt at graduation from a 4-year college (students who have graduated from private schools tend to be at the higher end of that range, whereas students from public schools tend to be at the lower end). There are five sequential stages through which deductive research will progress (Robson, 2002). First stage is Deducing a hypothesis from the theory. Secondly, expressing the hypothesis in operational terms, which propose a relationship between two specific concepts or variables. Testing the operational hypothesis. Examining the specific outcome of the inquiry. If necessary, modifying the theory in the light of the findings. Research strategy The strategy can be used for explanatory, descriptive and illustrative research (Yin, 2003). There are seven strategies namely Experiment, Survey, Case study, Action research, Grounded theory, Ethnography, and Archival research (Saunders et al., 2003). The survey being the popular strategy in business and management research it is used for exploratory and descriptive research. This strategy allows the collection of large amount of data from a sample in an economical way. The survey strategy is perceived as authoritative by people in general and is both comparatively easy to explain and to understand. It allows us to collect quantitative data which can be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The questionnaire, however is not the only way to collect data, it includes structures observations, structures interviews etc. This survey strategy calculates and analyzes the satisfaction levels of the customers. Methodology conclusion The researcher intends to use a quantitative approach using a positivist and deductive approach and utilizing the data required in a way to support the research and provides the ability to understand. Research methods Research may be categorized into two distinct types: Qualitative and Quantitative. The former researcher concentrates on words and observations to express reality and attempts to describe people in natural situations (Amaratunga et al., 2002). The latter grows out of a strong academic tradition that places considerable trust in the numbers that represent opinions or concepts. According to the other researcher research strategy should be chosen according to the research situation. The researcher uses quantitative method (i.e. questionnaire survey) to measure the customer satisfaction and quality of service provided by the restaurant staff (Yin, 2003). 4.1 Quantitative research Quantitative data is the information that can be counted or expressed numerically. Quantitative data refers to all the numeric data that can be a product of all research strategies (Saunders et al., 2003). This type of data is often collected in experiments, manipulated and statistically analyzed. Quantitative data can be represented visually in graphs and charts. A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. They are often designed for statistical analysis. Questionnaire survey Questionnaires are often used to collect primary quantitative data from the customers. The aim is to gather valid, reliable and unbiased data from a representative sample of respondents. One of the objectives of this research is to investigate factors which are more effective on overall customer satisfaction and service quality, in which case a certain proportion of customers should be inquired to draw out quantified information, and the sample will be chosen in a random basis. Questionnaire based survey is more efficient in terms of time, cost, thus increasing its accuracy. Moreover, the sample is much easier to be picked up. Types of questionnaire There are two types of questionnaires namely Self-administered Questionnaires and Interviewer Administered Questionnaires (Saunders et al., 2003). As far as this research is concerned the researcher will use Self administered Questionnaires which will be delivered by hand and collected later. Questionnaire design Questionnaire consists of a set of questions that the respondent has to answer in a set format. Questionnaire design calls our sociological imagination into play in a number of ways. It is designed in such a way that the questions are meaningful, sensitive, precise, searching and salient to our respondents. The construction of questions should be done precisely so that the respondents will want to answer them fully and truthfully as they can. It consists of open ended questions and close ended questions. The open ended question asks the respondents to formulate their own answers, whereas close ended questions requires the respondents to pick up an answer from a given number of options. The questionnaire will include: Ranking questions, open ended questions, simple direct questions requiring the respondent to tick a box and questions using Likert scale. Sample selection A sample is a set of elements selected in some way from a population. the available sampling methods fall into two main categories: probabilistic and non-probabilistic sampling. The researcher prefers to go for Non probability convenience sampling where the sampling will be randomly done until it satisfies the requirements of the research. The minimum criteria for selecting the samples from the population would be that the individuals or the group of individuals selected should be the customers KFC Belle vale. S = Where n = no of customers e = 5% Data collection methods If the researcher wants to use some data for a particular purpose, he may use either the primary data or secondary data (Waters, 2001). Primary data is collected by the researcher himself for a particular purpose. Secondary data will be collected for other purposes. Primary Data The primary data will be collected through the questionnaires distributed to the customers/guests. A well structured questionnaire will be given to the customers in order to evaluate the opinions, beliefs, views and preferences of different people. The primary data collected through the questionnaires will be interpreted using SPSS. Secondary Data Data which includes both raw data and published summaries is incorporated in secondary data (Saunders et al., 2003). Various forms of secondary data will be collected from journals, books and websites in order to support the research. The researcher has access to wide range of facilities of the learning resource centers of the universities in Liverpool Profile, Personal Suitability 5.1 Researcher personal knowledge and skill Researcher is the graduate in Bachelors of commerce (Honours) from Osmania University. The researcher has done a project on Export Finance provided by banks in India from the State bank of Hyderabad (SBH) during his graduation. The store understands that this research can help them to improve their business as the researcher has prior experience in customer services. Research suitability As the researcher is the employee of the KFC store, it will enable him to get the required data and conduct a survey on service quality. Being the employee of the organization, the researcher did not want to lose the opportunity to enhance on his personal interests. Moreover, with the support of his manager the researcher has gained confidence in the completion of the task successfully. A consent letter has been issued by KFC to carry on the survey which has been put in Appendix 3. Time and project management 6.1 project plan A project plan which is produced using the Microsoft Office project 2007 is presented in the Appendix 2. The project starts on 1st July 2011 and ends on 29th November 2011. As the researcher is an employee of KFC, there seems to be no hindrance for the successful completion of his project. However there may be some aspects which may exceed the time allocated, say for example the questionnaires. This is because the researcher will have to manage with the customers for their respective feedbacks which may exceed the allocated time period. Cost The only cost involved in this research would be the printing cost of the questionnaires. Research protocol 7.1 Questionnaire protocol Questionnaires will be directly given to the customers after they complete their meal. Sufficient time will be given to fill the questionnaires. A brief idea about the research will be included in the questionnaire. On receiving the completed questionnaires, the data will be loaded into SPSS to analyze it. Using Microsoft Word Amend all the text to be Times New Roman size 12. Amend all the text of any bold or italic script. Remove all headers and references to original authors. Others 8.1 Ethical issues Research ethics relates to questions about how we formulate and clarify our resource topic, design our research and gain access, collect data, process and store our data, analyze data and write up our research findings in a moral and responsible way (Saunders et al., 2003). The researcher guarantees that the research will cause no harm in terms of personal or physical harm (Kumar, 2005). That sharing information about respondents with others for non-research purpose is un-ethical. All the data will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed without the organizations permission. The author will make sure that no questions will be asked which would break the legal rules and the privacy of the organization. The raw data will be safely stored by the researcher who will be the only person to access it, and it will be destroyed once the study is completed. The required ethical approval form has been put in the Appendix 4.

College Sports Gambling   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  With all of the controversy of gambling in college sports, why is the issue still an issue? The answer is money. There were actions taken towards this by Congress, but the problem is that it was never completely abolished. Congress had made the mistake of creating a way around it. It is now commonly referred to as â€Å"the Las Vegas loophole.† They outlawed the betting nationwide with the exception of one state, one state that is the capital of gambling, Nevada. This has caused few changes, with the exception of the ever-growing revenue that it generates. Another reason the legality still remains is one not frequently mentioned, but the question of the ban being constitutional. But no matter what the law, is there realistically ever going to be silence or content?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To trace the tracks to the start of mending this problem, we need to go back to 1992. This is the year that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act took precedence. This law restricts gambling on amateur sports in 46 states and essentially leaves Nevada as the only state that can take bets on those games. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) and Rep. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) are striving to get two separate bills passed, both of which are targeted at prohibiting gambling on amateur sports. The bills were introduced a year ago, and at the time, were heavily favored. The bills would legally put a stop to betting on NCAA games, the oh-so-notorious March Madness (the NCAA Tournament), and wagering on all college sports for that matter. Las Vegas casino lobbyist have turned offensive. Who wouldn’t, if there were possibilities of losing a $700 million cash cow, with approximately $70 million on March Madness?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The money that is generated from sports betting both legal and not, is much too vast to be eradicated. Nevada is the tree trunk for which sports gambling is derived. The casinos are complete with giant electronic boards that offer information on daily events ranging from odds to player injuries. Nevada generates $2.3 billion a year on legal sports betting , where as, betting on college sports revenue in Nevada accounts for $650 million of the amount. This is far from the issue though. Reign Over Me Evaluation Essay

Depression affects all people. Reign Over Me is a movie that deals with a character in a grave state of depression. In Charlie Fineman’s (Adam Sandler) case depression hits hard and leads to a major behavioral change. Fineman blocks out major parts of his life including his college roommate, Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle). After running into him on the street, it takes a while for this encounter to jog his memory of his best friend. We learn later that this depression is due the death of his three daughters and wife in a plane crash. The news devastates Fineman. He cannot function in society the same and loses purpose in life, as well as belief in himself. Instead of letting this distress out and working to recuperate, Fineman shuts everybody out and tries to hide from the truth. This can be a serious problem in today’s society. Many people are embarrassed or too hurt to try to move on and they let what happened dictate their individual future. In this film, directed by Mik e Binder and produced by Jack Binder and Michael Rottenberg, the message of depression and its effects is relayed quite clearly. This movie relates to the real world very well; it also helps open up the eyes of many who do not understand what depression can do. Reign Over Me deals with a character who has the biggest part of his life taken from him in an instant. While others cannot tell how much Fineman is suffering by his actions, the loss of his family crushes him. Instead of mourning he falls into a deep state of denial where he almost forgets their existence. An important theme throughout is Fineman trying to fix the wrongs he did to his family, like snapping at his wife about kitchen remodeling or not taking his shoes off. Although they are just little things he makes sure nobody comes in his house with their shoes on and remodels the kitchen several times. These small acts show that he still remembers. There is a scene in the movie where Fineman opens up to Alan, his former roommate. Although he would not open up to the therapist, he tells Alan all about what happened. It was in brief but in this scene you get to see how much recalling his past hurts. Just saying his daughters’ names makes him cry. This scene demonstrates how hard it is for Fineman to talk about his life. Throughout the film, we learn little by little the events  that took place. Outsiders and even his in-laws think that he is disrespecting his deceased loved ones. They do not understand why he does not carry a picture of his family with him or even have one in his house. They take it to the point of wanting to have him committed until he finally talks to them and explains how hard it is to live each day and how hard it is to see them or anybody because he sees his family everywhere. There are many critics and naysayer to this movie as well as supporters. Most of the reviews I read really concentrated on the part played by Adam Sandler. Adam Sandler shoulders a very dramatic character in this movie and this side of him is underappreciated. He is notoriously known for his funny facial expressions and antics. This leads people to believe he can’t play a serious role but in Reign Over Me he hits a home run. The same reviews were not so critical about Don Cheadle. He played a part he is used to playing combing a normal act with the occasional funny quote or joke to keep the viewers on board. The actors play out a very realistic scenario. The ir parts are down to earth and don’t undermine or take away from the message of the movie. From my own personal judgment the movie Reign Over Me takes the viewer into a world many people don’t or won’t ever see. It combines excellent acting with a reasonable story-line that relays a meaningful message. They story is not far-fetched and is very comparable to the realities of many people today. As far as the acting is concerned, both actors play a side the viewer is not accustomed to seeing compared to other movies Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle are known for. Other movies like, Billy Madison (Adam Sandler) or Brooklyn’s Finest (Don Cheadle), these actors have very different parts. This movie shows the talent in each of the individual actors. Both actors play off each other during the movie which takes much skill and created a wholesome and tasteful production. Many scenes are not verbatim and the skill of the actors to improvise makes for an entertaining movie watching experience for the audience. I personally recommend this film to anybody from young adults to the elderly and all of the above. Reign Over Me doesn’t only tell a story but will also tug the heart of the audience in a serious and dramatic rollercoaster ride. The movie may have many critics but I think both actors did a wonderful job throughout the film keeping the audience entertained for the entire two hours and forty minute movie. The debate is on! Go watch the movie today  and take into consideration the many sides and create your own opinion. Understanding Place Value Decimals, Large Numbers, and Easy Charts SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips How do you read 4,349,394.382? What does each digit mean? How do you know what number means what? With place values, that’s how! If you don’t understand how decimal place values work, a number like that can look like a bunch of nonsense. In this article, we’re going to cover what place value is, why you need to know it, and how to work through place value problems to better understand large, complex numbers with ease. What Is Place Value? Let’s start with the basics. Place value refers to the meaning of a single digit in a specific position in a number. Unfortunately, that definition doesn’t make a whole lot of sense without an example, so let’s look at a number: 14. We know that number is fourteen, just as we know that 14 is the number that comes between 13 and 15. We can even break it down further- 14 is 4 more than 10. 10 + 4 = 14. Clearly, the different digits- the individual numerals that form a number- mean something. The 1 doesn’t mean 1, it means 10. That’s because the 1 in 14 is in the tens place. It tells us how many tens are in a number. So in the number 14, there is one ten and four ones- 10 + 4 = 14. If we change that 1 to a 2, we get 24, or twenty-four. The number 2 in the tens place tells us there are two tens. Each place value is 10 times larger than the place value to the right of it. So when we look at a number like 4,349,394.382, our example from earlier, we can see that there are: 4 ones 9 tens 3 hundreds 9 thousands 4 ten-thousands 3 hundred-thousands 4 millions That gives us a better idea of how to read the number aloud. It’s four million, three hundred forty-nine thousand, three hundred ninety-four. But what about all those digits to the right of the period, or decimal point? Those digits represent parts of one. Imagine this number represents the number of leaves on a particularly big tree. The .382 might represent a fraction of a leaf- perhaps one that’s been nibbled on by bugs. So how do we read those numbers? In the same way we read all the others, except the digits represent fractions of a whole. The digits to the right of a decimal point work almost exactly the same way, except there is no â€Å"ones† equivalent. We end the place values representing fractions with â€Å"th,† so instead of tens, hundreds, thousands, the numbers to the right of a decimal are tenths, hundredths, thousandths. More specifically, in our example, .382 equates to: 3 tenths 8 hundredths 2 thousandths Or, read aloud, three hundred eighty-two thousandths. The same rule holds true of numbers to the right of the decimal: each place value is ten times the place value to the right of it. Ten thousandths equal one hundredth, ten hundredths equal one tenth, and ten tenths equal one whole. Put the whole number together, and you get four million, three hundred forty-nine thousand, three hundred ninety-four and three hundred eighty-two thousandths. It may sound confusing, but once you’ve spent a little time with it, it’ll become second nature. Just remember that a digit’s place value represents the meaning of a single digit and that every place value is 10 times larger than the place value directly to the right and you’ll be on the right track. Why Do You Need to Know About Place Values? All of this can seem pretty complex. Why do we even need to know place values? Place values become increasingly important as you work more frequently with decimals and large numbers, because without understanding place values, you’ll have a really difficult time understanding how to read them. Place value is also really important in solving word problems. If a word problem says that somebody bought one thousand and four tacks, you might write that number as 1,400, 1,040, or 1,004 if you don’t understand place values. Only one of those answers can be correct, and you’ll have a much easier time of understanding those kinds of problems with a solid grasp on place values. Place Value Chart One of the best ways to learn place value is using a chart. You can write the different place values along the top and line the digits of numbers up with their correct position on the chart. Here’s what a place value chart might look like, though you can include more or less columns depending on the number you’re working with. Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 0 Hundreds 0 Tens 0 Ones 0 Tenths 0 Hundredths 0 Thousandths 0 Ten Thousandths 0 Let’s try filling out a chart with an example number, like 156,412.5485 Hundred Thousands 1 Ten Thousands 5 Thousands 6 Hundreds 4 Tens 1 Ones 2 Tenths 5 Hundredths 4 Thousandths 8 Ten Thousandths 5 We took each digit and wrote it into its proper place. Now if we have a question about what any digit represents, we can answer it quite easily. For example, the 6 in this number represents 6 thousands. This is especially useful when dealing with numbers that contain zeroes. Let’s take this chart and turn it into a recognizable number: Hundred Thousands 3 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 3 Hundreds 0 Tens 0 Ones 5 Tenths 0 Hundredths 0 Thousandths 3 Ten Thousandths 0 Remember, having a 0 in the place value of a number doesn’t mean that you skip it- it means that there are zero of that particular value in the number. 104 means that there are no tens, just one hundred and four ones- you can’t write 14 instead of 104 just because there’s a zero in it. So in this case, the number would be written 303,005.003. We can drop the last zero since nothing follows it. It might be tempting to write 335.3, but, as you can see, that’s a very different number from 303,005.003. Understanding place values helps us hold a place for the value that goes into that spot! Place Value Example Problem Let’s work through some example place value problems to get a better handle on how place value works. What Is the Place Value of the 4 in the Number 1,459.235? First, we have to write the number into our place value chart. The decimal will always fall between the ones and tenths place, so we write the nine in the ones place and the 2 in the tenths place, and fill the rest out from there. Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 1 Hundreds 4 Tens 5 Ones 9 Tenths 2 Hundredths 3 Thousandths 5 Ten Thousandths 0 The question asks the place value of the 4. We look at the digits in the chart to find the 4 and see that it’s in the hundreds position. That tells us there are 4 hundreds, so the place value is 400. What Digit Is in the Thousandths Place in the Number 6,872,485.495? This one is a little different. The number is larger, so we’ll have to extend our chart a bit to fit it. Once again, you can start with the numbers on either side of the decimal, so 5 goes into the ones box and 4 goes into the tenths box, then fill out the rest of the chart from there. Find the box labeled â€Å"thousandths† and see what number is next to it. It’s 5, and since we’re only asked for the digit rather than the place value, that’s our answer. What Number has 4 Thousands, 0 Tens, 3 Hundredths, 0 Ones, 5 Hundreds, and 6 Tenths? Notice the zeroes in this question- that’s where things start to get difficult. We’ll use a chart to help us figure it out! Fill the proper columns, but pay attention, because the numbers are out of order. Remember that the decimal goes between the ones and tenths place. Write it out, and you’ll get 4,500.63! Practicing place value probably won't make you better at dogsledding, but it can't hurt. The number in that column is 6, and since it’s asking specifically for the digit and not the place value, 6 is our answer! What Is the Place Value of 3 in 3,042.28? HINT: Are we looking for place value or the digit? HINT: Pay attention to zeroes! Answer: As always, we start with a chart. Following that, we’ll end up with 60,239.4! 3 Key Tips for Decimal Place Value Problems Place value is an important skill to develop; once you understand it, you’ll have an easier time understanding large numbers. Understanding it can be tricky, though- it’s a concept that requires a lot of practice and memorization. Use these tips to help you improve your place value understanding until it becomes second nature! Memorize Ths Versus S Whole numbers versus fractions are an easy place to get tripped up when working on place values. Remember: numbers that end in â€Å"ths† are part of a whole- that means tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. Numbers that end in â€Å"s† are whole numbers, so tens, hundreds, thousands, et cetera. Always double-check to make sure that you’re looking for the right number. Thousands and thousandths are very different from one another! Draw a Chart Though you will likely eventually develop the ability to tell place values without one, when you’re first starting out it’s wise to use a chart. It’s way easier to line the numbers up that way than to rely on counting and potentially get them wrong. Don’t Forget Zeroes Zeroes are the nemesis of people just learning place values. Remember, a zero in the middle of a number, such as 104, doesn’t literally mean nothing- it’s a place holder telling you there are no tens. If you skip the zero when writing the number, you’ll end up with an incorrect answer, so be sure that you fill every place! What’s Next? So this gives an insight of how the principle of determinism is limited, and how the chaos theory on a larger scale emphasizes on the weaknesses of science rather than the strengths. 4 Nonetheless, a counterargument would argue against science being a prediction tool, as meteorologists do not base their information on predictions, unlike the Mayans, they do studies that prove their predictions. However predictions are being made regarding the weather all the time, if I look up at a grey sky in the summer, I would most probably be expecting rain and not snow, and my chances of being right would be considered quite big as I acknowledge my previous experiences with rain in my past. The opposite of chaos is order, and as we are dealing with both chaos and order, I think that including the relevance of order could be beneficial to enhance our understanding further in this matter. Control, or in other words order, is something often discussed about when speaking of chaos theory, if I was to define chaos theory in my own words I would probably put it between determinism on one hand, which could predict everything, and having total chaos on the other hand, in the sense of not being able to predict anything at all. Therefore the chaos theory does consist of both prediction but also probability. So another approach or different aspect of this claim could be the regular muscle contractions of the heart, as the heart does not at all times deliver a perfect rhythm of heart beat. These middle grounds that the chaos theory is lying on can also known as the ancient dichotomy which refers to many ancient societies believing that the future is foreshadowed, but also that chance is a different major factor in our lives working simultaneously as predictions. 5 Hence as a conclusion to the knowledge issue, I think a reasonable response would be that the attempt of scientific methods to establish truths are relevant to some extent depending majorly on what is being established, such as the prognosis of weather can only be studied in a short term period, whereas when examining the muscle contractions of the heart its pace can be predicted over and over again, it does not beat perfectly regular, but the chaotic manner that slightly exists in heart beatings does prove a different view of determinism. 6 Looking back at the heart beat, an example can be drawn; as I exercise the rate of my heart beat increases, and as I stop it slowly returns to its normal pace, the beating of the heart is regular enough, but not too much regular that it would become inflexible and fail to respond to unpredicted impulses, as well as the irregular beating does not fail to meet the requirement of pumping the blood throughout my body7. To continue this essay onto the next real life situation we come across another aspect of predictions. Now as I maintain onto my next real life situation which deals with history and the predictions of the Mayan civilization, the knowledge issue that arises is, how can we draw a clear line between fact and the interpretation of predictions made in the past? The claim I would make as a knower would be that the interpretation made in our past does not give supporting factual information, it is purely a prediction of what is going to happen in the future, unlike the weather prognosis which is based on scientific methods. People do not necessarily need to believe that they can perceive order in the chaotic events predicted by the Mayans, although to a certain extent we have to accept the fact that predictions may come true. I consider the future being unpredictable enough to be chaotic; all uncertain factors of life can be seen as chaos as we are not able to find any order to help us understand the future awaiting us. As the chaos theory determines, prediction and chance both work together, so what the Mayans predicted could according to the chaos theory involve the chance of something happening, which would be an uncertain factor. This means that we cannot wholly base our knowledge and faith on the reliability of predictions; instead we should be able to accept the chaos and hope to find some order in it. An example could be, if I predict receiving a phone call tomorrow, then I might very well be influenced by either my subconscious mind telling me I actually am expecting someone to phone me, or if not, chance will dominate the possibility of me receiving a phone call. In any case, predictions can never be proven or disproven, until the time of prediction has gone past which is why predictions differ a lot from theories. A theory can always be proved right or wrong with the right measures, but a prediction cannot be proved at all until after something is supposed to happen, consequently it is not possible to draw a clear line between facts and predictions in the past. There can be a lot of factors influencing a prediction, such as a subconscious mind, manipulation of thoughts etc. Evidently predictions can only be factual after and not before the happening. In my conclusion as a knowers perspective, I agree to the full extent with the title statement that people need to believe that order can be glimpsed in the chaos of events, and by having used personal and factual examples I have tried to justify my standpoint and clarify my belief in why I argue for or against these claims. Without our belief we cannot identify order persistently, our belief is the main key for us to focus on the order rather than the chaos that future brings us. If we do not learn to exhibit our needs in believing then we cannot adapt to our lives and subsist in comfort, in general it is simple to recognize this belief, we live with it and accept it, because we know nothing about tomorrows future, yet we hope to find peace and subtle living conditions that will keep us happy as a human being and race.
